FQH Workshop at BioFach 2008: “Organic Food Quality and Health – latest research findings“

On March 21st, FQH organised, as in previous years, an interesting Workshop at the BioFach Conference in Nuremberg. The Workshop, introduced and moderated by Manon Haccius (Alnatura, D), was attended by an audience of approximately 70 people.
Speakers were: Lucy van de Vijver (Louis Bolk Institute, NL), on “Organic food consumption and allergy. The KOALA Birth Cohort Study”, Ewa Rembialkowska (Warsaw University, P), on “The content of bioactive compounds in organically and conventionally produced plant crops” and Machteld Huber (Louis Bolk Institute, NL) on “Organic, More Healthy? A search for bio-markers. Results of the Dutch study 2005 – 2007”. The presentations are published on the members area of this website.

Organic feed makes the immune system more alert

Organic feed leads to a more alert immune system. Chicken, fed with organic feed, showed a lower weight and a stronger recovery of their weight gain after an immunological challenge. These remarkable differences are the main findings in the study “Organic, More Healthy? A search for biomarkers of potential health effects induced by organic products, investigated in a chicken model”.
On December 13th the final report of the study was presented to the Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. The research was conducted by the Louis Bolk Institute in cooperation with Wageningen UR, RIKILT Institute for food safety and TNO, in dialogue with the International Research Association for Organic Food Quality and Health, FQH. The final report is approved by the FQH-board as a FQH report, with the FQH logo on the cover.

FQH Scientific Workshop in Driebergen 5 – 6 November 2007

On November 5 and 6 a very fruitful Scientific Workshop was organised in Driebergen for FQH Members. The discussion on the design of excellent food quality experiments and animal feeding experiments was continued. It became clear how closely related the topics of quality research and animal experiments are, and that one cannot talk about the second without the first. Participants could share viewpoints and find solutions for their own work, and managed to fix some common strategies for further research projects.
The Workshop was really a new step on the track of establishing a scientific community and developing common standards for good research on organic food, quality and health, and on the type of research/tests which are not applicable or advisable in organic research.
People were very content and expressed the wish for such meetings once or twice a year!
A summary of the discussions is available on the Members Area of this website.
